PEEK based biocompatible coatings by electrophoretic deposition
Investigator: Ranjot Singh Virk (PhD student)

Supervisor: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini
Biomedical coatings are emerging as very important candidate for funtionalization of bio-inert metals, for regeneration and repair of bone defects. The research from the last decade shows that electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a simple and versatile method, based on the principle of electric field assisted deposition of charged particles present in stabilized suspension [1]. EPD can be used for the deposition of wide range of biopolymers, bioceramics and their composites. The motive of this project is to deposit smart bio-composite coatings via EPD on stainless steel ( SS316-L) as a substrate. The coatings will be based on the biopolymer polyether ether ketone (PEEK) with the combination of various bioceramics including bioactive glasses. The combination of PEEK and bioactive glasses will be used to impart bioactivity to the coatings [2]. The present work holds high potential to develop optimized bioactive composite coatings, which can be employed for the treatment of various bone related defects.
